How to Renovate Your House On A Budget
Home renovations are often a rather expensive and time consuming process. While we all love the new look and added value renovations bring to our homes, it’s sometimes hard to set aside the funds for such projects. However, there are many ways to renovate and freshen up your home without spending too much! To renovate your house on a budget, use some of these helpful tips!
Update Old Flooring
Your home’s flooring can catch visitor’s attention, for better or for worse. Damaged or dull flooring is an eyesore and can really drag your space down. Thankfully, there are a few different ways to affordably update your flooring. If you’re hesitant to commit to a floor or pattern, use peel and stick tile or wood vinyl. This is also a great option if you’re renting your apartment or home. These self adhesive tiles are easy to apply and remove once you want to change up your flooring again. Consider a tile with a bold print for your bathroom or laundry room. The statement tile will modernize these usually drab rooms.
Another great way to update tile affordably is to paint over it! Use stencils to paint designs on your tile, or completely update the floors with a whole new fresh coat of paint over all the tiles. If this sounds a little too time consuming, a new rug can completely change your space as well. A large patterned rug in the living or dining room is sure to receive countless compliments from guests. Such a statement piece will elevate your space from simple to special. Note: Don’t be afraid to take hand-me-down rugs from family and friends! A good dry cleaning may be all it needs to look and feel new again.
Fresh Art & Decor
While adding new art isn’t a renovation per say, it can absolutely take your home to the next level. Large pieces of wall art are a fantastic way to add your own tastes to your space. This is a great way to spruce up any area of your home. Before nailing any holes in your walls, try taping a piece of cardboard up which is sized to the art to see if you like the placement and size. Consider purchasing some new standing lamps or trinkets for your shelves as well. These are often overlooked, but can help shape the theme of your home. You can go to vintage shops or flea markets to find some great decorative pieces at a steal of a price.
New Furniture
Okay, maybe we used the term “new” too loosely here, but the concept is all the same: you can upgrade your furniture on a budget! With “thrifty” in the title of this article, of course we had to mention thrifting for new and used furniture pieces. If you’re looking to spruce up your home with some furniture upgrades, keep these tips in mind:
- Establish a budget. This can help you keep costs under control while shopping for furniture. A lot of times, thrifting consists of visiting a number of different places to find what you’re looking for. Don’t let your numbers get carried away during the process!
- Keep an open mind. You never know what you’re going to find while thrifting. Keep an open mind when you see cool pieces for a great price. You might can use those pieces in ways that you didn’t originally plan.
- Get creative. When you find cool pieces, don’t be afraid to spruce them up a bit! New paint always goes a long way, but there are a ton of other creative ways you can personalize thrifted furniture to your style.
Create Statement Walls
Painting might be a pretty basic upgrade, but it is a sure fire way to brighten up the inside of your home and create modern statement walls. You could even use stencils to paint designs on one wall and really make it pop. Another great way to add an affordable statement wall to your home is with makeshift shiplap boards! Use plywood (cut and sanded to the desired shiplap look), paint the pieces, and put them in place! Updating your baseboards with a fresh coat of paint can also make a huge difference in making your space look new again.
A New Backsplash
New backsplash may sound expensive, but we promise it doesn’t need to be! There are countless peel and stick options available at a fraction of the cost of traditional tile backsplashes. You can cut and stick these tiles up without the need for any expensive tools. The adhesive on these tiles is strong, so you won’t have any need for grout or other materials. These tiles won’t yellow over time either! A new backsplash can add new life to your kitchen.
